Lisa's troubles began in 2004 when she started experiencing intense dryness, blurry vision, and extreme light sensitivity. These symptoms gradually worsened, culminating in sudden, intense pain spikes. She described it as living with sand in her eyes.
In 2009, Lisa was diagnosed with a specific type of secondary angle closure glaucoma, a progressive disease. Glaucoma can lead to optic nerve damage, nerve fiber loss, and even blindness if left untreated. Initially, she underwent laser iridotomy, a procedure creating a tiny hole in the iris to improve fluid drainage.
Despite this treatment, Lisa's struggles persisted, and she spent years being redirected by physicians. It wasn't until 2017 that her condition began to make sense.
Lisa was diagnosed with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), the most common type affecting collagen and impacting ligaments, tendons, joints, discs, the spine, organs, and blood vessels. EDS affects proprioception, the sense of body awareness, often leading to clumsiness and accidental bumps.
Lisa's EDS manifested in frequent accidents like walking into doorways, slamming shoulders, and hitting furniture. Even simple tasks like taking off a shirt could result in accidental bumps due to her brain's inability to register spatial awareness.
EDS can lead to various comorbidities, including mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). Vision complications are also common, making diagnosis and management challenging.
In 2023, Lisa received a referral to Dr. Irfan Kherani's clinic at UHN's Toronto Western Hospital, specializing in treating glaucoma patients with EDS. She had seen 15 other ophthalmologists who misdiagnosed her condition as migraines.
Dr. Kherani's approach was unique. He recognized the unique challenges posed by EDS, focusing on the weak ligaments supporting the lens inside the eyes. This led to a complex cataract and glaucoma diagnosis for Lisa.
Dr. Kherani emphasized the importance of personalized care, ensuring Lisa's best interests were prioritized. He anticipated potential surgery complications, ensuring a smooth process.
In 2024, Lisa underwent two surgeries: a combined cataract and glaucoma surgery in April and another cataract surgery in September. Dr. Kherani employed a minimally invasive glaucoma surgery technique, minimizing trauma and optimizing the body's drainage system.
Minimally invasive surgery is crucial for patients with EDS, as it reduces the risk of complications. This technique uses small incisions or microscopic implants, unlike traditional surgeries that create a new drainage system.
Today, Lisa's vision is stable, and she's enjoying her hobbies again, including riding her recumbent trike and flower pressing. She credits the surgeries for giving her hope and a brighter future.
