Marine Mammal Center Seeks New Home in Cayucos: A Central Coast Update (2026)

The Marine Mammal Center, a cherished institution on the Central Coast, is on the move. After 25 years at the Morro Bay power plant, the center has received a notice to relocate, leaving its current home. The center's senior manager, Aliah Meza, expressed gratitude for the property owner, Vistra, and other landlords who have supported their operations. The center is now actively searching for a new location, with a strong desire to stay on the Central Coast. Jeff Boehm, the chief of external relations, emphasizes the importance of Morro Bay and its surroundings, citing the region's ideal climate for the animals they care for and the presence of their patients, volunteers, and staff. The center is eyeing the Cayucos Water Reclamation facility as a potential new home, with the Cayucos Sanitary District's general manager, David Athey, explaining that the district has ample space to accommodate a new facility. Mockups have been presented to the board, envisioning a space with an exam room, offices, and a conference room. The district is currently in the process of developing a lease, and once approved, they will apply for building permits with the county. Boehm reassures that the center is not taking any risks and welcomes any potential property leads. With a deadline of the end of the year to move, the center is hopeful for a positive outcome with the Cayucos Sanitary District, acknowledging the numerous steps ahead.
