Giants Outfielder Jung Hoo Lee Briefly Detained at LAX: A Minor Hiccup on the Road to FanFest!
Just as the San Francisco Giants were gearing up for the second part of their FanFest tour, outfielder Jung Hoo Lee found himself in an unexpected situation at Los Angeles International Airport. On Wednesday evening, Lee experienced a brief detainment, which he later described as a simple "misunderstanding this one time." Thankfully, everything was quickly resolved, and he expressed his relief that the matter was settled.
"Obviously, a bit hectic the last few days, but I’m glad everything’s worked out," Lee shared through his interpreter, Brian Kang. He assured everyone that he had all the necessary paperwork typically required when entering the country, though he opted not to disclose the specific document that caused the delay. The entire airport experience lasted a little over four hours.
Adding to the travel complexities, Lee's interpreter, Justin Han, also encountered "passport issues" and is scheduled to arrive in the country next week. Lee, however, doesn't believe the current political climate played any role in his temporary hold-up. "I don’t think there’s anything specific that I’m too worried about in that sense," he stated, emphasizing his gratitude for the resolution and his eagerness to rejoin his teammates.
This incident comes on the heels of a highly successful goodwill tour to South Korea earlier this month. A significant contingent from the Giants organization, including president of baseball operations Buster Posey, general manager Zack Minasian, new manager Tony Vitello, and shortstop Willy Adames, visited Lee in his home country. Lee described the trip as an "unforgettable experience," highlighting a memorable Korean BBQ outing with the team and a tour of the vibrant Namdaemun Market with Adames and Vitello. Meanwhile, Posey and Minasian engaged with Heo Koo-Youn, the commissioner of the KBO.
The Giants also hosted a baseball clinic at LG Champion’s Park, inspiring 30 local high school players. Lee and Shane Robinson, a new coach under Vitello, led outfield drills, while Adames and former Giant Jae-Gyun Hwang guided infield practice.
Lee was deeply moved by the outpouring of support. "It’s pretty evident the support that the Giants have in my home country in South Korea," he remarked. "It’s pretty cool to see the fans rallying around the team and getting excited about us over here in San Francisco. It’s really cool to see the Giants investing and putting a bigger focus in my home country, and I’m really excited to keep that momentum going."
Manager Tony Vitello echoed these sentiments, reflecting on the trip last Saturday: "A lot of meals and breaking bread with everybody. For me, being in my first year, it was great to be around any of those people. Even Willy, who I’d spent a lot of time with in person, it provided a better opportunity to get to know him."
But here's where it gets even more exciting! Lee is set to return to Asia soon, this time to represent South Korea in the World Baseball Classic. As one of the key players for a nation that has never won the tournament, the stakes are high.
South Korea is in Pool C, with games scheduled in Tokyo from March 5-10. They'll face tough competition from the reigning champions, Japan, along with Australia, Czechia, and Chinese Taipei. And this is the part most people miss... If South Korea makes a deep run, there's a thrilling possibility that Lee could face his Giants teammate, Logan Webb, who is a prominent part of the United States' formidable pitching rotation!
"It’s a big honor and a privilege to represent my country at the WBC, and I’m really excited to… have the opportunity to face off against Logan Webb, my teammate," Lee shared, recalling his participation in the 2023 WBC. "We’ll definitely have a lot of talks before then. It’s on us to make sure we can face Logan eventually in that tournament."
