The story begins with Shirley Ward, a Denman Island resident, who experienced firsthand the consequences of filling up at Gas N Go's Buckley Bay station. Her brand-new 2025 Mazda refused to start, leaving her stranded and in need of a tow. Mechanics soon discovered the culprit: water in the fuel, a result of an issue with the ethanol content.
"It was a costly lesson," Ward shared with CHEK News. "Nearly $1,000 later, we finally got our car back, but the experience left a bitter taste."
But here's where it gets controversial. While Gas N Go's owner, Wayne Procter, acknowledges the issue and promises to "make it right," customers like Ward are still waiting for resolutions.
"I reached out to them, seeking reimbursement for the tow, repairs, and a rental car," Ward explained. "I'm still waiting, and I know I'm not alone."
And this is the part most people miss: the impact on the community. Dozens of locals have taken to Facebook, sharing their own stories of car troubles after fueling up in Buckley Bay.
"It's concerning," said Susan Weseen, Ward's niece. "The lack of response from Gas N Go is surprising, especially given the number of affected individuals."
Procter, however, maintains that the issue has been resolved and that he's working to ensure it doesn't happen again. He attributes the delay in responses to the Christmas holidays.
"We're doing our best to make amends," Procter assured. "The problem was with the ethanol, and we've taken steps to prevent a recurrence."
As for Ward's complaint, Procter claims they're awaiting confirmation before processing the reimbursement.
"We'll take care of it as soon as we receive the details," he said.
