The Future of FanDuel Sports Networks Hangs in the Balance: Will DAZN’s Bold Move Reshape Sports Broadcasting?
The sports streaming giant DAZN is reportedly on the verge of acquiring FanDuel Sports Networks, but this deal is anything but straightforward. And this is the part most people miss: if the acquisition goes through, it could significantly alter the financial landscape for teams currently partnered with Main Street Sports Group, the network’s current owner. According to a Sports Business Journal report by Mike Mazzeo and Tom Friend, teams are expected to receive a proposal soon, outlining how DAZN plans to move forward—with a major twist. Teams would face revised financial terms, including potential reductions in rights fees. This leaves them with a critical decision: stay with DAZN or explore alternatives like over-the-air broadcasts or streaming partnerships. But here’s where it gets controversial: if more than 10 of the 29 teams under Main Street’s umbrella reject DAZN’s terms, the entire deal could collapse. Why? DAZN needs a critical mass of teams to make the acquisition worthwhile, as it aims to scale its local rights portfolio. Is this a fair ask, or are teams being backed into a corner?
If the deal falls apart, FanDuel Sports Networks will shut down after the current NBA and NHL seasons, leaving teams scrambling for alternatives. For the nine MLB clubs involved, there’s an additional option: joining MLB’s own broadcast arm, which already produces and distributes games for six teams. Under MLB’s new deal with ESPN, these games would be streamed digitally via the ESPN app. But this raises another question: Is MLB’s in-house solution a better long-term bet than DAZN’s offer?
Time is ticking. With the MLB season approaching, teams need clarity on where their games will air. Puck reports that a decision is expected by the end of January. Will DAZN’s gamble pay off, or will teams chart their own course? What do you think—is this a win for sports fans, or a risky move that could backfire? Share your thoughts in the comments!
